Banana Mango Smoothie With Flax Seeds

One of the great things I like to have in the morning is a cold, healthy smoothie. This is a quick and simple recipe for anyone on the go or just a healthy alternative to a fast-food snack in the morning if you do not have time for breakfast. Below is the recipe for my banana-mango smoothie with a dash of flax seeds. This is not only delicious but healthy for you too because you will be getting fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, calcium, protein and put a stop to your sugar cravings! It's a great snack or a healthy breakfast and it will also save you money and calories, since you do not have to buy breakfast on the go or cave in to an unhealthy, "fill my empty-morning-belly" food item.

Recipe:

1 banana (medium-sized)
1 cup of diced mango
1/2 cup of orange-mango juice
6 oz plain, non-fat organic yogurt
1 tsp of organic, cold-milled, ground flax seeds

Directions:

* Pour the juice in the blender

* Add the banana, diced mango and yogurt in the blender

* Blend until you get a smooth texture

* Pour into a tall glass and stir in your flax seed

**You can use a medium-sized, ripe mango or buy already diced, frozen mango chunks from your grocery store.
**Do not use flavored or low calorie yogurts as they contain too much sugar or artificial sweeteners, neither of which, in my opinion, are good for your health!
**To change up the taste, you can swap the orange-mango juice with plain orange juice or even pineapple juice

Bananas Are Not Only Used For Banana Bread - A Walk Through Banana Recipes of the World

If you look across the world you will find many uses of bananas in cooking. There are lots and lots of different recipes containing bananas, different cultures use them in very unique ways. If you think of it you can kind of compare bananas to potatoes when it comes to different ways op preparing them across different cultures.

The first banana recipe that I will give you comes from Pennsylvania and is pretty old. You all know it or have heard of it - it is simply called banana split because the bananas are split in half and served with some ice cream and strawberry and chocolate sauce, and maybe some whipped cream.

In Brazil, you are sure to find a dessert of bananas mashed in with brown sugar, cinnamon or cloves and grated ginger. The mix up is brought to cook slowly over low heat as it thickens. It is left to cool then molded into a roll, sliced and then served.

Next we are moving to the Caribbean. Here they are making a dessert that includes frying the bananas in oil. The cut the bananas in pieces and first dip them in flour then in batter that is mixed with some rum for the flavor. After the bananas are fried they sprinkle them with some sugar and they are ready to be eaten. This recipe is called the banana fritters.

Next country that has some banana recipes to share and is big on bananas is India. They have quite a few recipes that include bananas so lets mention a few of them. I am sure that you have heard of Lassi, a traditional Indian drink. Of course there is a banana version of it that is called Sweet banana lassi and is made out of (no surprise) bananas and yogurt. Then there is a dessert called Panchamrutham that is made out of bananas, spices and honey and plenty of other recipes.

Next we are going into some of the countries that are also known for growing bananas. It is understandable that these countries have plenty of recipes that include bananas. Lets take a look at a few recipes from Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand. They use bananas in a wide range of recipes from adding them to salads, using them in curry dishes (this is very common) or adding them to different food including vegetables. Bananas go great with stews and meat.

So far we have eaten bananas raw, cooked and fried, now it is time to drink them. To do this we need to go to East Africa where they use them to brew beer! and if you are still not convinced how useful and widespread bananas are in cooking - of all the meals prepared with bananas only 80% are prepared with the fruit itself, all others use other parts of the banana plant, like leaves for instance.

Healthy Homemade Banana Bread

This past morning, the significant other and I got into a bit of a kerfuffle over whether or not my famous banana nut bread was actually a healthy snack. Her position was that since it tasted so dang good that there was no way that it could be good for you and that I should not be making it as often as I do (I just love to bake). On the other hand, I insisted that since I use only the finest, healthy ingredients and far less sugar than what the original recipe called for ( I add an extra banana instead), my tasty and delicious banana bread was much better for us than most of the other snack foods that we liked to indulge in.

Determined to prove the other one wrong, we both vowed to engage in some research in order to determine whether banana bread is a healthy snack, or really just another tasty and delicious junk food that two health conscious people have no business eating.

Here is what I found out...

While store-bought banana bread made with processed sugar, processed flour, unhealthy oils, and other additives and preservatives is about as good for you as a deep fried twinkie, homemade banana bread made from select ingredients does actually have the potential to be, well, good for you.

Here is a list of the good stuff that homemade banana bread may have in it:

Bananas: rich in dietary fiber, potassium, Vitamin C, B6 and manganese, bananas are a healthy fruit that keeps on giving when partaken in moderation. Rich in sweet natural sugars, they are the perfect alternative to that morning donut.

Whole Wheat Flour: With your daily requirements of fiber, protein, manganese and selenium, whole wheat flour can give you the fuel you need to keep your energy levels high throughout the day.

Eggs: rich in protein and essential amino acids and vitamin D the incredible edible egg can help you build muscles, grow better hair and nails and even help improve your eyesight.

Walnuts (optional): Rich in protein, fiber, vitamin B and E, as well as those super beneficial omega 3 fatty acids, walnuts can help reduce the risk of heart disease by helping lower bad cholesterol.

Pretty much the only thing in homemade banana nut bread that is not particularly good for you is the sugar, and this can be offset by using natural cane sugar or even a sugar alternative such as honey or agave nectar. As long as it is homemade or baked by a trustworthy baker, banana bread can be considered a healthy and delicious snack, provided you do not smother it in a ton of butter.

Homemade Ice Cream - Boisterous Banana

There is something about bananas that I don't really like. I can't quite put my finger on it but even though I don't mind the taste of banana I would never out of choice peel and eat a banana on its own. It is probably something to do with the texture, or the fact that there doesn't seem to be an elegant, sophisticated way of eating a banana, or the fact that I can't help thinking that people are going to snigger if they see me eating one on the way to work. Whatever the reason, a banana would not be in my top twenty all time favourite foods, probably wouldn't even make the top one hundred if truth be told.

The rest of my family love bananas however. Well no, that's not quite true. They love bananas when they see them all bright and yellow and looking fresh in the supermarket. When the bananas are unpacked from the bag and in the fruit bowl on the kitchen counter they don't seem to like them so much. I say that because of all the fruit in the fruit bowl, the banana is the one that is most likely to be left well past it's sell by date, it's skin turning from a bright yellow to a pock marked, mottled yellow spotted with patches of brown and blue.

I don't really mind the banana being left, if not quite on the shelf certainly in the bowl, because the softer the banana the easier it is to transform in to beautiful, boisteroushomemade ice cream. The odd thing is that even people who don't like bananas love this ice cream. Even my mother who has a pathological dislike of the banana, to the extent that she can't even bear to be in the same room as a banana, will happily sit down and eat a big bowl of it.

Turning bananas in to homemade ice cream is incredibly easy. The quick and easy recipe below is my personal recipe but you can add to or change to your own personal taste. Occasionally I will add chunks of dark, good quality chocolate or chocolate coated stem ginger to the ice cream maker a few minutes before the end of the churn. For a real grown up version I also have a wonderful recipe for boozy caribbean banana ice cream which includes a generous measure of dark rum.

Homemade Banana Ice Cream

4 ripe Bananas, the softer the better

Inside of half a Vanilla Pod

450 ml Double Cream

75g Brown Sugar

Scrape the seeds from half a vanilla pod and mash the bananas with the cream, sugar and vanilla until you have a creamy mixture. Pour in to an Ice Cream Maker and churn. Once it is ready transfer to a freezable bowl and freeze. As with all homemade ice cream it should be eaten within one week.

Favorite Food Dehydrator Recipes

It's time for school once again and with that comes money for clothes, books, lunches and extracurricular activities. In addition to all of this, you need to have snacks and after school treats so the kids don't raid the refrigerator as soon as they come through the door. As I was making my shopping list, I was able to leave off quite a few items. It was a great summer for fruits and vegetables and I really took advantage of this. My Excalibur dehydrator really came in handy making fruit rollups, banana chips, raisins and dried peaches. Get creative this year and count the dollars that you'll save.

How to Make Fruit Rollups

I had tried this recipe using strawberries last summer but now I am being overrun with apples so I decided to give it a shot. They're wonderful. Apple fruit leathers put you in the mind of apple pie without the sugar and starch. Peel enough apples to make 2 cups and cut up into chunks. Blend the fruit until it's a smooth pureee. Add 2 teaspoons of lemon juice of 1/8 teaspoon of ascorbic acid to keep from discoloring. Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of honey for sweetness, sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg and pour onto the dehydrator tray (fruit leather tray or Teflex sheets). Dry at 140 degrees for 6-8 hours. Check the product to make sure it's not soft then remove, cool, roll up, wrap in plastic and you're done!

How to Make Banana Chips

Banana chips have to be the easiest treat I've made so far. I used to save my ripened bananas and create banana nut bread for the winter months. After making a couple of loaves this year, I thought of all of the sugar that this took. No wonder the kids bounced off the walls! My Excalibur is large enough that I can cut up 17 bananas to 1/4 inch thickness, soak in 1/4 cup lemon juice for 15 seconds, lay out and dry at 150 degrees. Depending on how you like your dried bananas, start by drying for 24 hours and check. Dry until you get the consistency that your kids like.

It's Been a Great Year for Grapes

Have you ever purchased those little boxes of raisins at the store for treats? Wow, are they expensive! And to think that you can wash, dry off and throw your grapes into your dehydrator for a few hours and spend just a few cents for electricity. I will never buy raisins again. The juice may evaporate but the vitamins and antioxidants are sealed into the raisins and more pure than any you could buy that's been treated with additives and chemicals.

Dried Peaches to Die For

Peaches are a delicacy at my home because they are usually so expensive but this year, my neighbor's tree worked overtime in producing more than she could possibly keep. I took advantage of this and made these dried peaches. Cut your peaches in half then peel. Remove the seed and quarter. Buy some fresh limes and make your own limejuice to pre-treat your peaches. Dry in your dehydrator at 135 degrees for 6 to 20 hours (depending on thickness of the peach slices and your dehydrator), until pliable and remove and cool. What a treat!

Trail Mix at $6.00 a Bag? Not!

In addition to all of your great snacks that you have just made, why not turn some of these into a special trail mix for the kids? Banana chips, raisins, peaches and apple chips, mixed together with some coconut and assorted nuts will put those store bought varieties to shame. And you know that they are all natural and a great pick me up without the sugar and salt.

Which Dehydrator?

Many consider the Excalibur Dehydrator the finest dehydrator you can buy. The only machine with a unique Parallexx Horizontal Airflow Drying System, it makes fruits and vegetables fresh and free from preservatives and additives, something you never knew had a funny taste until you have experienced the real thing. Junk food begins to taste just like junk once you have prepared your own fruit by drying with the Excalibur. The thanks you'll get from your family and friends, plus the money you save, makes the best worth getting and using regularly.

3 Delicious and Simple Smoothie Recipes: Tiramisu, Banana and Strawberry, and Blackberry and Orange

For some reason, smoothies have remained a fairly Ameri-centric cultural aspect and never really made it to us across the pond in the UK. Well, I'm here to change that and present you with 3 incredibly simple smoothie recipes that'll have you wishing it was summer every day.

Smoothies originated in American health-food stores in the 1930s, when they purportedly began selling a pureed fruit drink that was based on recipes from Brazil, though this could never be verified. They were popularized in the 1940s along with the invention of the modern household blender. There even exists a Juice and Smoothie association. The first Smoothie trademark was established in mid-1970s in New Jersey by the California Smoothie Company. Believe it or not, a copyright in 1972 for a Banana and Strawberry smoothie actually included the ingredient horseradish! Luckily there is no horseradish in any of the recipes I shall show you today.

Of course, when making smoothies a blender is essential, so give up now if you don't have one and stick to plain juice!

Non-Alcohol Tiramisu Smoothie:

- 2 crushed ice cubes

- 200 ml of milk

- 2 tbsp of sugar

- 3 tbsp of coffee

- 5 wafers

Preparation:

Blend the ice then add one after another the milk, the sugar, and the instant coffee. Crush the wafers into the bottom of a glass and serve the smoothie on top of that. Mmmmmmm, delicious!

Classic Strawberry and Banana Smoothie:

A classic favourite of many, this should be your first stop in the world of smoothies.

Ingredients:

- 1 banana

- 10 cups strawberries

- 2 cups of milk

- 1 tbsp of sugar

Preparation:

No real prep work, chop up the bananas and strawberries and whizz everything together in the blender. Uhh, that's it. Serve, enjoy.

Blackberry and Orange Smoothie:

Where I live, you can gather blackberries, pounds and pounds of them, from the local parks and pretty much everywhere. We usually only make Blackberry crumble out of them (more on that another day I guess), but now I have this awesome option in my blackberry repertoire too. You can use frozen blackberries too, which is great because half my freezer consists of blackberries right now;)

Ingredients:

- 2 1/2 cups blackberries

- 1 cup vanilla yoghurt

- 1/2 cup orange juice

- 1/2 glass milk

Sorry, no preparation instructions, but the amounts listed above will give you two delicious servings and only 150 calories per serving! Great!
