GOING BANANAS!

me ma called me "Banana Fingers," when i was a wee wee lad, very young. 3 to 5,6, 7 years old? i had big strong hands as a kid and still have incredibly strong hands, but i 'grew into them,' LOL. i still have photos of me with bunches of bananas from our plantation at the bottom of the garden in Mount Edgecome, on an Experimental Sugar Cane Farm, as my dad was in the field of scientists there and headed the Entomology dept. i, before Fine Art, studied Horticulture and Entomology being one subject - insects are FASCINATING - see by UV/'black light' is my fave of their myriad characteristics :-) anyway i grew up and spent so much time talking to elementals in the garden. the land of Fae show themselves to kids, if you are open hearted and given to more spiritual persuasion! my hands are still disproportionately strong [normal size now] for my elvin frame and why they never tire when doing deep tissue swedish massage. NO! PSE NO GROSS COMMENTS ALLUDING TO ANYTHING CRUDE LEWD AND VULGAR RE MASSAGE! PISSES ME OFF the BIG ONE!!! i have 'Healing Hands' and use them, as God intended! we grow bananas here in kzn, i have quite a few trees in my garden now. i love the big soft green leaves! i'm on the north coast where therez a lot of banana farms. ANYWAYS i went bananas earlier cos youtube kept timing out while i was uploading vids and can you believe i'm on a 56k dial up modem?????????????????? so i was very GRRRR and had to employ anger management, so grabbed a nana as my blood ...

The Story Behind Coffs Harbours Big Banana!

If you have not discovered already, Australia truly is a strange country. One of the biggest cult phenomena that have spread through the country like a plague is the Big Thing statues. The Big Thing phenomena are basically just a massive amount of large plastic statues of animals, fruits, or just daily life things. So while driving through the desert in Australia, you shouldn't be shocked if a trout by the size of a boat suddenly appears on the side of the road. Where did this cult phenomenon come from?

It all started back in 1964 with the big banana in Coffs Harbour. John Landy, who owned a road side banana stall, wanted to build something spectacular that made passing traffic stop. An early day September day he came up with the brilliant idea of building the world's biggest banana... On the twenty-second of December 1964 the Big Banana was finally finished, and has since then been a popular attraction on the road through Coffs Harbour.

In later years, the Big Banana has now grown even bigger. Being the host to a roller coaster, an ice skating park, a water park and a café embarrassingly called "Going bananas cafe", the banana can almost be called a small amusement park. While the rides & attractions might not be world-class, the place is surely worth visiting just to experience what a man's dream of a huge banana can do to a town. They couldn't have said it better themselves: The Big Banana - It's a whole bunch of fun!

Excellent Banana-Pecan Bread That is Perfect For Diabetics

If you are diabetic or just trying to cut back on sugar in your diet, give this yummy Banana-Pecan Bread a try. This bread is made with Splenda but still offers the wonderful taste of banana bread. This bread has a touch of fresh orange juice which adds an extra touch of moisture, often lacking in sugar-free baked goods. Make this bread a day ahead, wrap in plastic wrap before cutting, and let set overnight for an even better bread. Makes a good gift for diabetics; use in gift baskets, housewarming, hostess gift, birthdays, or Christmas gifts.

BANANA-PECAN BREAD

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup Splenda granular
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup mashed ripe bananas (3 med bananas)
1/3 cup butter, softened
2 tbsp milk
juice from 1/4 large fresh orange
2 eggs
1/3 cup chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of the flour, Splenda granular, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir the mixture to combine.

To the dry mixture, add the mashed bananas, butter, milk, and orange juice. Using an electric mixer, blend on low speed until well blended. Turn speed to high and blend for two minutes. Add the eggs and the remaining 3/4 cup of flour. Beat the mixture until well blended. Stir in the pecans.

Spray an 8 or 9-inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray. Pour the batter into the pan and smooth out evenly. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes or until the bread is browned and a toothpick inserted in the thickest part comes out clean. Cool in the pan on a wire rack for 5 to 10 minutes. Remove from the pan and cool completely on the wire rack.

NOTE: This bread is even better if cooled, wrapped in plastic wrap and allowed to set overnight before slicing.

Banana Bread Recipes For Diabetics

Back-to-school and the upcoming fall season call for bringing out fruit bread recipes. Following are some recipes for banana breads and muffins. All are suitable for diabetics.

BANANA-ZUCCHINI BREAD

1 cup egg substitute
2 cups Equal Sugar-Lite
3/4 cup canola oil
1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 medium sized ripe bananas, mashed (1 cup)
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup whole-wheat flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups shredded unpeeled zucchini
1 cup chopped pecans

In a large mixing bowl, beat eggs. Blend Equal, applesauce and oil into eggs. Add banana and mix well. Combine flours, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. Stir flour mixture into egg mixture. Stir in zucchini and pecans just until combined. Pour mixture into two greased 9-inch loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.

BANANA NUT BREAD

3 large well-ripened bananas
1 egg or 1/4 cup egg substitute
1/2 cup sugar-free applesauce
1/3 cup low-fat milk
1/3 cup sugar or Splenda for Baking
1 tsp. salt, optional
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup whole-wheat flour
(or you can use 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mash bananas with a fork. Add egg, applesauce, milk, sugar or Splenda, salt, baking soda and baking powder to bananas. Mix well with fork. Slowly stir in the flour. Stir only until flour is moistened. Fold in chopped nuts. Lightly grease a loaf pan with cooking spray. Pour batter into pan. Bake 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool in pan for 5 minutes before removing to a cooling rack.

BANANA CHOCOLATE CHIP MUFFINS

3-4 large bananas, ripe and mashed
3/4 cup Splenda granular
1/4 cup egg substitute or 1 egg
1 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt, optional
1/3 cup butter, melted
1/4 cup mini chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, blend together bananas, sugar and egg or egg substitute. Add flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Blend well. Stir in the butter and chocolate chips. Fill paper-lined muffin tins 2/3 full. Bake at 375 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

1st Warning: The banana diet has nothing to do with the meal, eating bananas as the main.

If I choose, I would like to be the first or the third way ... probably in the 3rd Way. Why? First, you must use bananas as a snack. Using only their meals, is opening a few problems when it comes to snacks.It 'so important to use them as snacks.

It 'also important to have at the table, because bananas contain live enzymes can help the food more digestible. Good digestion is essential for the progress of long-term weight loss.

Facts About the Deadly Banana Spiders

'Banana Spiders' are deadly and highly poisonous. It is useful to keep informed about these harmful insects to keep yourself protected. The species are of two different nature whose scientific names are 'Phoneutria', found in Central and South America, and the other one is 'Nephila Clavipes', found in North America. Among both species, the former one is more deadly and poisonous than the latter. Bananenspinne, Wandering Spider and Kammspinne are the other names by which phoneutria species are also known as.

The South American banana spiders, also known as 'phoneutria', are the most dangerous. They are 1.3 inches long and is quite big and aggressive. Though the dense rain forests are their primary home, they can also be located in the cities. From 1970 to 1980, this spider caused for hospitalization for about 7,000 people in the southeastern parts of Brazil.

This species of banana spider has poison that acts as neurotoxic on the nervous system of human body. These poisons are equivalent to the poisons of the 'Red Back Spiders', also known as 'black widows'. If a phoneutria bites, then immediate medical care is to be provided. This is because anti-venom has yet been discovered to cure the poison. The symptoms of this spider's bite are that of cold sweat, pain, and uneven heartbeat.

The North American 'Nephila Clavipes' banana spiders have poison that is similar to the poison of the 'black widow', but its poison are not so harmful as those of the 'black widow'. These spiders have a stretched-out body, resembling a banana shape and its color is also black and yellow. The body of the female spiders is large with a length of around 1.1 inches or 33 cm, whereas the male counterparts are around half the size of the females.

These North American spiders generally prefer areas that are sunny and are found in tall trees. They tend to build their web across pathways and cover quite a large area with the shape of an orb. They are gold-colored and are quite stronger than other spider's web.

Some of this spider's other names are: the 'golden orb weaver' or the 'writing spider'. Sometimes, it is confusing to distinguish between the yellow and black 'garden spider' and this North American spider. The garden spider is also called a 'writing spider' because its web has a criss-cross pattern This spider may not be very harmful but it is advisable to consult a doctor if you are bitten by it because it can cause some allergic reactions, which can be deadly.

The diet of bananas is 1 of the best and easiest way to contribute to weight loss, your commitment. It seems there are many variations of this diet ... I also have a version of this diet. Many other versions of this diet just seem plain stupid and not very practical.

Here is a easy to use, is slow, steady weight loss. This is not an extreme diet, as you might think.

You might think that the banana diet is all just eat bananasDay. Wrong! Obviously this is not very practical and intelligent. It 's just 1 main rule of this diet and another rule ...

Rule # 1: Eat 1-2 bananas before each meal ... at least 3 times a day.

Pretty simple, eh? Not much to think about. When you eat, you'll be eating 1-2 bananas before eating. Convenient, easy, healthy, and not very memorable.

Eat breakfast, 2 bananas. Before lunch, eat 2 bananas. dinner, eat 1 banana before. How to eat 5 total Bananas a day.

Rule # 2: eat what you want for meals.

This rule is simple ... eat what you want, just eat bananas 2 breakfast, 2 bananas before lunch and 1 banana before dinner. Of course, eating healthier normal can help your weight loss efforts even more, but is not 100% necessary.

Bonus Rule: You can substitute 1 banana lunch with an apple before breakfast e.

As mentioned, you can replace> Banana with an apple before breakfast and lunch. It is pay to alleviate boredom. Nothing more.

I really do not know how much weight you lose on this or any other diets that use bananas, but you should notice a steady weight loss. Not very fast, so if that is what you are looking for ... forget the diet of bananas.

Prepare pudding according to the recipe on box. Line the bottom of a large, snap-on plastic container with a layer of Nilla wafer cookies. Spoon out a layer of Vanilla pudding over the cookies. Slice up the bananas. Layer some of the banana slices over the pudding. Follow with a layer of Cool Whip. Repeat layering, in same order (cookies, pudding, bananas, Cool Whip.)

If you like your recipes to be a little less sweet, you can spoon a few globs of sour cream into the vanilla pudding, but even if you don't, this will come out pretty darn good.

After assembling your pudding and snapping on the lid, refrigerate overnight so that the cookies can soften overnight for extra gooey fun.

Note: whatever way you present this recipe, it will still taste just fine. You can get fancy and serve it in a parfait glass, layering very carefully and slipping Nilla wafers and bananas down the sides of the bowl, where they can be seen suspended in the pudding. Or you can mix up the Cool Whip with the pudding and just throw it together in a big container.

To serve: scoop into plastic cups or paper plates.

Reactions:

I'm not sure exactly why, but a funny thing happens to people as they consume this goopy stuff. As eating commences, a hush falls over the gathering, and the sound of smacking lips and plastic spoons grazing cups can be heard. Appreciative murmurs soon follow. Both children and adults grow mesmerized, inhaling cup after cup like it's their job.

Here are some verbal reactions I've had:

"Ooooh. That stuff is GOOD. What is that, bananas?"

"Hey, honey you have to come over here and try this banana stuff!"

"Do you mind if I just sit here next to the pudding? I'll leave some for other people... I swear."

"Wait, so... what's the recipe again? Bananas? And then... what do I do with the pudding..."

"What IS that?" (pause.) "Oh! Oh, MY. Uhh... can I have more?"

"This is some good slop!"

The last time I made this, it occurred to me that it would work just as well with any number of pudding-and-cookie flavors.

Variations:

Oreo cookies and chocolate pudding

Butter cookies, vanilla pudding and strawberry slices

Dutch Oven Cinnamon Bread - How to Make a Dutch Oven Bread That is Great for Breakfast or Dessert

This is an easy bread recipe that you can cook in your Dutch oven. It is a delicious cinnamon bread that can be used as a dessert or a breakfast. It is also sometimes called Monkey Bread.

Ingredients:

4 cans refrigerated tube biscuits

1 cup brown sugar

1 stick butter or margarine

1 cup sugar

4 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions:

Cut each biscuit into fourths. You can take several at a time and cut down through all of them to save some time. Mix the sugar and cinnamon in a zip-lock bag. Add all of the biscuit quarters and shake until they are all are coated very well. Melt the butter by inverting the lid of the dutch oven and placing it on or near the fire. Since one side might be hotter than the other, you may need to rotate the lid, or stir the butter to get it all to melt.

Place the coated biscuit fourths in the bottom of the Dutch oven. Pour the melted butter over the biscuit quarters, making sure get get butter on each one of them. Put 6-8 coals underneath Dutch oven and 10-12 on top. Bake for approximately 30 minutes, but you will want to check occasionally to make sure that the oven is not too hot and that the bread is not burning. Rotating the Dutch oven about a 1/4 turn each 8-10 minutes will help also. When done, remove and serve.

If you want to have a nice added touch, make some powdered sugar glaze and drizzle over the bread. This is an easy way to make a cinnamon roll like dish when you are camping. You can even get the biscuit quarters prepared ahead of time. Prepare and store in the zip-lock bag. Just make sure they are well coated to help keep them from sticking together.

Something about bananas makes people laugh. We talk about "going bananas" and "slipping on banana peels." You would think that these yellow-skinned beauties were made for the comedy club.

• Though more research needs to be done, bananas may replace antacids in your medicine cabinet as an effective way to quell the inner flames of heartburn and indigestion. Although experts don't know why they work, bananas seem to act as a natural antacid.

• In addition, bananas may be helpful for preventing and treating ulcers. There have been a few studies showing that bananas may have a protective effect in ulcer treatment," says William Ruderman, M.D., a gastroenterologist in private practice in Orlando, Florida.

• Scientists suspect that bananas may guard against stomach damage in two ways. Ingredients: 4 scoops of chocolate ice cream, 2 ounces chocolate syrup, grated chocolate, 1 ounce milk.

Method of Preparation: Put all the ingredients in blender stirring well. Blend on high speed until creamy. In order to achieve the desired consistency you can add milk or ice cream. Pour the shake in a glass and top with grated chocolate.

Creamy Avocado Dip

Ingredients: Half ripe avocado, one-fourth cup of finely shredded cheese, 1 tsp plain yogurt, 1 tbsp finely chopped tomatoes.

Method of Preparation: Put all the ingredients in food processor or blender. Blend on high speed until they become smooth and creamy. Instead of blending, you can also mash the ingredients.

Mashed Cauliflower and Potatoes

Ingredients: 10 oz of cauliflower florets, 2 pounds of potatoes, 2 tbsp of minced garlic, one-fourth cup each of whole milk and grated cheese, 1 tbsp of butter.

Method of Preparation: Peel the potatoes and dice it into pieces. Place the diced potatoes and the cauliflower florets in a large pan. Put water into the pan such that it covers the vegetables completely. Boil it for about 10-15 minutes until the vegetables are completely cooked. Drain the remaining water and add minced garlic, butter, milk and grated cheese to the vegetables. Now mash the mixture with the help of a masher until a desired consistency is achieved. Serve it warm.

Banana Muffins

Ingredients: 1 ripe-mashed banana, 2 cups of self-raising flour, half cup each of milk, melted butter and brown sugar, 1 lightly beaten egg, one-fourth cup chopped walnuts.

Method of Preparation: Grease the muffin tin lightly with some butter. In a large bowl mix flour and sugar. Add milk, egg, butter and banana to it. Mix it well but don't over mix. Place the mixture into the pan holes with the help of a spoon. Top with walnuts. Bake for about 15-20 minutes. Your muffins are now ready to eat.

Potassium Use

Potassium is one of the electrolytes requires for maintaining health. Potassium balances the levels of acidity, blood pressure and transmits electrical signals between nerve and cells, along with helping in regulating the body's water balance and neuromuscular function. It is required for carbohydrates and protein metabolism.

Potassium is found in fruits (one banana can contain 500mg), beans, milk, whole grains, fish citrus, un-process meats, and vegetables contain significant amount of Potassium.

Potassium has uses in connection to high blood pressure and kidney stones (citrate in combination with magnesium citrate). High deficiency of potassium in human are rare except cases of prolonged vomiting, diarrhea, or use of potassium depleting drug, "diuretic" drugs.

Potassium and sodium work together in the body to maintain muscle tone, blood pressure, water balance and other functions. In hospitals, use of Potassium and Sodium Chloride are often use in IV's for patients to assist in improving their health conditions. Though the amount of Potassium needed for maintaining health is minute, it is essential.

High blood pressure made worsen when there is too much salt and too little dietary potassium in our body. Excess potassium is excreted through urine and sweating. Excessive potassium is toxic and will affect the heart but mainly a problem in the case of kidney failure.

Deficient in potassium may cause fatigue, leg cramps, muscle weakness, slow reflexes, acne, dry skin, mood changes and irregular heartbeat. 3,500 milligrams is the recommended daily intake of potassium. Include in your daily diet a banana, citrus fruit, or a dash of apple vinegar will help replace lost potassium through your daily activities especially in body building.

Mtori: Banana Soup from Tanzania

In Northern Tanzania the Green Banana or Plantain is eaten more than any other starch food and is, interestingly, the only staple food in the world that is not grain or a root vegetable. There are many variety of banana - a plantation close to us has over thirty varieties. Many if my neighbors grow banana or plantain - usually growing more than one variety. I love the yellow soft Ugandan variety called Matoki. Unfortunately for me this is not preferred by the Chagga tribe, who are dominant here in Arusha. They prefer the firmer plantain called Mshali.

The Banana Tree is not really a tree at all, it is a herb; in fact the worlds tallest herb. It is mainly water held together by sticky greenery. The tree takes about 18 months to grow and fruit and is simply chopped down with two or three swift chops from a sharp panga. The tree or 'herb' produces a huge purple flower and then yields one very large crop of bananas on a single stem.

The sticky white resin that bleeds from the tree and the severed stem must be avoided; should it get onto clothes it stains and does not come out. Removing the skins is an art. Many of my African friends make it look so easy, a skill gained with practice I suppose. Remember to put oil onto your hands before removing plantain skins as the resin stains your hands black and is hard work to remove. Scrape all traces of back resin from the plantain before cooking

Mtori soup, made from plantain, is usually eaten for breakfast. Bellow is a recipe for this thick banana and meat stew.

This would usually be cooked over an open fire in a clay pot called a chungu - all the ingredients would be cooked in the pot at the same time. Once the cooking has finished the meat would be removed, cut into small chunks [fat and gristle is not discarded] and then reheated in the soup.

1 kilo beef short ribs

2 teaspoons salt

10 Plantain [green banana] peeled and sliced

4 medium-sized (King Edward) potatoes - peeled

2 medium onions, peeled and coarsely chopped

1 Tbs. butter

Put the s ribs, enough cold water, and salt in a large casserole pot and bring to a boil over high heat. Skim the foam and scum as they rise to the surface. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, partially covered, for 1-1/2 hours.

Add the plantains, potatoes, and onions, and continue simmering for another 30 minutes, or until the meat is tender and the potatoes can be mashed.

Remove the short ribs from the pot. Remove the meat from the bones and cut away the fat and gristle, and discard. Cut the meat into bite-size pieces.

Purée the soup and vegetables. Return the purée to the pot, add the meat, and stir in the butter. Adjust seasoning - Enjoy.
Coconut milk is sometimes added toward the end of cooking to make the soup even richer.
