What is the Banana Diet?

There is a new weight loss craze making its way around the world. The phenomenon known as the banana diet was developed by Hitoshi Watanabe who studied preventative medicine in Tokyo. This easy and quick weight loss plan has proven to be so successful that Japan is experiencing its first shortage of bananas. People all around the world are questioning what this particular diet entails and why are bananas considered a weight loss miracle. I will provide some of the answers to these two questions.

There are several steps to the banana diet. In the morning, you are supposed to consume only bananas and room temperature water. You can eat whatever you like for lunch and dinner but you have to make sure not to eat after 8 PM. Aside from the time restriction certain other rules include: no ice cream, no dairy products, no alcohol, no dessert after dinner, and the only beverage you can have with your meals is room temperature water. You are allowed one sweet snack in the mid-afternoon. So as you can see this diet is fairly easy, almost too good to be true according to some people. The freedom of this diet makes people question "how exactly am I going to lose weight if I can eat almost anything I want?"

Well there are several theories which explain how the banana diet works. The first theory has to do with enzymes. Some people claim that bananas contain certain enzymes which speed up metabolism and improve digestion. Another theory claims that it is the resistant starch in bananas which does the trick. This resistant starch supposedly promotes fullness and increases fat burning. However, no matter what the reason may be, people in Japan have truly taken part in this new weight loss miracle.

Don't Puke in the Banana Suit

What could I possibly mean with that title, Don't Puke in the Banana Suit? Well, years ago I had a friend named Chris and we hung around together in a crowd of guys. Some of us who worked together and some of us were friends of friends and we partied and watched College football games together.

One weekend Chris announced that he had gotten a part time job in advertising, on the weekends he would be wearing a costume and encouraging customers to come into the stores. Well Chris stayed late and partied hardy but managed to show up on time for the job. He was to wear a fiberglass banana suit with yellow leggings and dance in front of a frozen yogurt shop.

If you're from the Deep South you know already, it gets hot in the Deep South. In Montgomery Alabama it's almost always hot, in March it's hot but September in Montgomery is like July in New York or Chicago. Chris managed to dance for about an hour or so before the heat and humidity combined with a night of partying caught up with him and he puked in the banana suit.

Chris was our friend so we sympathized with his plight and we ripped on him unmercifully about it. The visual of a heaving banana in front of a frozen yogurt shop was just too much. He was fired as a dancing banana his career was ruined for he had broken the cardinal rule of dancing bananas. Apparently when the Moses of dancing bananas came down off the mountain top with the ten commandments of dancing bananadom don't puke in the banana suit was number one.

Chris wasn't too upset that his career in the realm of dancing fruit had been cut short after all what's the best it could lead to but Fruit of the Loom ads. He took our ribbing with good humor and it became a running joke. Anytime one of us would screw up at anything the comment would eventually be made, man he puked in his banana suit. If we were trying to pick up a girl or fix a car unsuccessfully, puked in the banana suit. It even became an admonition, careful don't puke in your banana suit!

Chris was our friend and his experience as dancing fruit had been a hot and miserable one. But to the owner of the yogurt shop to have paid good money for advertisement and to attract new customers into his business the specter of a retching banana out front calling Ralph and Huey instead of customers was a fiasco. Likewise for the owner of the banana suit, a customer totally dissatisfied with the entire produce entertainment industry and a banana suit that smelled of puke.
Even today twenty-five years later when I see one of those guys asking if you've puked in your banana suit will bring a smile. The course of the world had not been significantly altered the frozen yogurt shop still stands and the demise of the dancing fruit industry cannot be blamed on Chris alone. It's still funny though, "Mommy what's wrong with that banana?

So when during the course of life when I see a fiasco that has gone terribly awry I think to myself, well, you know. The higher we rise in life the more prudent we are expected to become. The less likely we are to become overheated and toss our cookies because we are older and wise enough not to party half the night before we climb into our alias as member of the fruit guild.

We find ourselves as a nation in a harrowing situation, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and threatening still more. Soon four thousand will be admitted killed with tens of thousands more wounded. Syria, Lebanon and Pakistan destabilized and an entire region that could erupt into a world war and apparently our own dancing fruit bowl hasn't given it a thought as the cost to the taxpayer approaches one trillion dollars.

Health care for children? The dancing banana says we can't afford it! Global warming? The dancing banana says we should let each country deal with their own green house gasses or in other words let's do nothing and I'll keep dancing. In our own country millions will lose their homes to foreclosure, wages for working people are stagnant. Wal-Mart is cutting prices on their twelve most popular items before the Christmas season even begins. The dollar at a forty year record low as foreign interests snatch up American stocks at fire sale prices.

Chris didn't have to tell us, he could have said he just quit. He could have made up a story but instead he told us the truth. He was willing to admit he made a mistake that he had screwed up and puked in the banana suit. He knew we would pick on him and tease him about it and we did but Chris had more character and honesty at twenty than the President has at sixty. The strength of character to tell us the truth despite his own personal embarrassment and not to blame others for his own failings.

Enough character to admit he puked in the banana suit.

Healthy After School Snacks

After school is your little one hungry for a snack? Do they run for the kitchen and grab any easily accessible packets of chips or bars of chocolate? Follow these easy to make snacks:

Here are some ideas of fantastic after school nutritious snacks for kids!

- Healthy Fruit Smoothies - just like a milkshake only healthy and full of fruit. Some suggestions are: add milk, strawberries, banana and honey. Or milk, banana and milo.

- Fruit salad and yogurt - cut up some chunks of fruit and mix it in a bowl with yogurt. Or cut up some different fruits and place them on a plate, then have a separate plate with yogurt.Then dip the fruits in the yogurt and eat. YUM!

- Home made muffins - make some home made muffins and add fresh fruits and fillers inside the muffins such as banana, sultanas, carrot.

- Dips and sticks - cut up some carrot, cucumber, celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, and ham. Then have some fun dipping vegetables in some yummy dips such as hummus, cheese dip.

- Crackers with spread - crackers such as vita brits or cruskits are a fantastic snack for kids, simply add a spread like vegemite and filler like cheese and there you have it a cracker with vegemite and cheese. Other spreads could be jam or cheese.

So next time you go to make an afternoon snack think twice before reaching for the chips or chocolate! And reach for some fruit, veggies or crackers!

You Can't Hold the Thought of "Banana," Yet Expect the Peach You Desire

Neither the Universe nor the Law of Attraction can, or will, free you from any self-imprisonment. The free will given to you by Source/Spirit allows you to hold the key and ability to move your mind into or out of any self-imposed "prison" you place yourself into. The Law is only able to follow your orders. Your orders are your thoughts.

You can begin your path to freedom. You can become aware of how and how often you self-imprison. You can find what you need . . . your key . . . to choose the experience of life you desire, moment-by-moment.

Often, because we perceive lack in some area or areas of our life, when we hear or read anything about the Law of Attraction, especially from those who've created wealth in their lives, we focus on using the Law to get more "fish." Right use of the Law isn't about getting more fish; it's about becoming skilled at fishing.

Like attracts like.

If you want to attract more and better, you need to think more "better" thoughts. Einstein said, "No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it."

Use of the Law is not about getting what you want; it's about understanding why you get what you get, and understanding how to get what you really want . . . first, at the inner level then at the outer.

We don't make things happen (create/manifest), we open a channel through our thoughts, faith, and understanding of the Law so they may happen. They don't happen through concentration (strain). They happen through allowing (flow). The moment you feel yourself forcing anything, including your thought, you've gone off-center. You put the thought of your desire into a mental form, absolutely trust Divine Intelligence has the right answer or way, and you remain available to take inspired, appropriate action.

When we follow this manner of igniting a manifestation, it's important to hold the Truth of Spirit and how the Law works from an inner state of calm trust. Place a thought into the field and return to inner and outer struggle (especially inner), and you negate what you aim for as an outcome. Doubt and trust cannot occupy the same space at the same time.

1. Accept there is no separation between you and Spirit/Source.
2. Know the Law of Attraction will perform (match) according to your mental/feeling vibrations.
3. Trust Divine Intelligence of Spirit and accept it is in you and you are an expression of it. Trust its perfection.
4. Remain open to inspired information and ideas.
5. Choose faith and trust in Divine Intelligence . . . no matter what.
6. Take right action you feel inspired to take, not compelled to force. If what you desire in no way infringes on another and expands your experience, why shouldn't it happen . . . unless there is something even better you haven't imagined.
7. Allow what you desire to experience (or even better) to be yours. If an opposing thought or doubt enters your mind, say, "Cancel" or "Delete;" and superimpose the image and feeling of experiencing what you desire over such thoughts.

You cannot hold the thought of "banana," yet expect the peach you desire.

Slipping on the Bargaining Banana Peel - How Bargaining Sabotages Your Attempts to Reach Goals

As a psychotherapist, I work with a lot of people who have a specific goal to reach. It may be to create a new and healthier diet, quit smoking, or to maintain a substance abuse free lifestyle to name a few. Entering into the mental dialogue of bargaining always leads to the goal not being reached; the Ego is ripped apart again, as a tirade of self-loathing remarks regarding one's failed attempt at change echo from ear to ear. In this article, we will take a look at ways to tame Bargaining and to increase your chances of manifesting the life changes that you seek.

We learn the concept of bargaining early on in life from our parents. A common parenting technique to get children to do something is to bargain with them. Most of us have heard phrases like "You can have a piece of pie if you eat all your dinner." Or, "If you clean your room and can go outside and play. (I just realized I dated myself. For you younger folk, "If you clean your room, you can play video games.) After all, "How can you eat your pudding if you don't eat your meat?"

As we grow older we learn about the benefits of bargaining as well. In the marketplace, bargaining is a good thing; it is part of the fabric of our society. We all want to get the best deal that we can. It doesn't matter if we are haggling over a head of red leaf lettuce at our local Farmer's Market, or buying a car; as Kramer from Seinfeld says, "Retail is for suckers." No one wants to feel that they are being taken advantage of; bargaining is good.

In well functioning relationships, couples have created balance and a sense of equality through the bargaining process. For example, one may agree to go see a movie that he or she has no interest in because his or her partner made a similar sacrifice the week before. Or, chores may be agreed upon through the bargaining process. "I'll cook if you wash the dishes." Thus, Bargaining is an essential feature of creating harmony in relationships. Now shift focus to the daunting struggle of creating and maintaining positive personal change. In this tipsy topsy world, bargaining is bad. How can this be?

Change is something that we humans resist. We like routine, as it gives us a sense of being in control of our lives. As we start to travel down the path of change, we voyage into the world of the unfamiliar. This is uncomfortable for us, as our normal ways of coping with stress and anxiety have been left behind in the land of the familiar. This uncomfortable state of mind opens the door to "Mr. Bargain" and there is no delay in his entry into our minds. It's like opening an email that has a virus, once its done, there's no stopping it.

Mr. Bargain's only goal is to make sure that you fail; that your feet slip out from beneath you and you find yourself reverting back to the exact behavior that are trying to avoid.

Mr. Bargain has a bag of tricks at hand. A trick like, "You've been good and haven't had any donuts for 4 days. You've changed. Go ahead and reward yourself," is a common tactic to get you to fail. The next thing you know, you find yourself sitting at your local donut shop gorging on maple bars starting to feel like crap. Or, Mr. Bargain will work to convince you that the goal that you set for yourself is unreachable; that you just don't have what it takes, so you might as well just give up.

To stay on course in order to reach your goal, it is paramount that you learn to quickly identify Mr. Bargain when he shows up and let him know that you will have nothing to do with him! When you hear bargaining dialogue start, you must stop it immediately. Drown out his feeble messages/tricks with your own powerful mantra. For example, "I don't bargain!" In doing so, you let Bargaining know that you are serious about change, that you are aware of its tricks and that you are going to stay the course and will reach your goal.

No one is perfect. Even when we become aware of Bargaining's tricks, one may find him or herself picking one's self up from the ground, having slipped on the proverbial banana peel that Bargaining tossed on your pathway of change. Don't despair. Restart your journey, dedicating once again to avoid Bargaining. With practice you'll get better and better at avoiding Bargaining's sabotaging tricks and create positive life changes.

What About Bananas?

Bananas are the world's most popular fruit, but did you know that bananas do not actually grow on trees? They are actually the world's largest herb? Bananas are a fruit that everyone enjoys but they don't seem to be one that people know a whole lot about.

Bananas grow on a banana plant in clusters that are commonly called a bunch. The true name of a bunch of bananas is called a "hand", and each of the individual bananas on the hand are called "fingers". The weight of an average banana is 1approximately 25 grams, which consists of approximately 75% water and 25% of dry matter content. The fleshy inner portion is sweet and delicious and widely enjoyed, but generally the peel or banana skin in not eaten.. The stringy parts of the banana flesh are called 'phloem bundles'. Bananas contain valuable sources of Vitamin B6, Vitamin C and potassium that are healthy and that our bodies require. Many athletes commonly use bananas for energy in their physical health routines.

Bananas are grown in at least 107 countries worldwide, although they were originally native to Southeast Asia and Australia. Bananas, eaten raw in their yellow form and cooked green or red bananas, are the main staple of many African populations. Boiled or baked green bananas or plantains (a starchier version of the banana) can also be found in many Caribbean Island recipes. Bananas can be very versatile. When they are dried, bananas can be eaten as a snack food or they can be ground up and made into flour.

Bananas come in various sizes and colors, including the yellow, purple and red banana. Green bananas that are cooked and enjoyed in Caribbean and African cultures are really the unripe version of the yellow banana. The red banana is generally sweeter than the yellow banana and has a slight raspberry-type flavor. The skin of the red banana is red to purple in color, and has a slightly pinkish flesh. These sweet bananas can be eaten raw, or they can be used to add a wonderful color to various cooked banana dishes.

Bananas are picked green and shipped in an unripe condition due to the fact that ripe bananas are easily damaged when being transported to market. Bananas need careful handling and are easily bruised.

The flower of the banana plant (or the banana blossom or heart) is also often used in the Southeast Asian, Bengali and Indian cuisines, where they serve it raw with dips or cooked in soups and curries. Some cultures also use the tender core of the banana plant's trunk in several dishes. Bananas can be fried, boiled or steamed and the juice extracted from the core of the plant is often used to treat kidney stones. In various cultures, banana leaves are useful for cooking as a wrapping, for carrying things in, and even as umbrellas (because of their waterproof properties).

With all of the uses of the banana plant and the general good taste, it is no wonder that bananas have become one of the world's most popular fruits. Where else can one get so much delicious taste and healthy benefits from one source?

Ingredients:
1/2 banana, sliced
6 oz skim milk
1 Tsp. vanilla extract
1 Tsp. cinnamon
1/3 cup ice, crushed

Directions

Chop half a banana into slices, place in plastic baggy and freeze overnight. (Do the same with the other half and save for future shake. Trust me, there will be a future shake.)

Gather ingredients.

Place half banana (now chopped and frozen) into blender. Add 1/3 cup ice, 6 ounces of skim milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Blend until smooth.

(Optional: Add 1 packet of Sugar for extra sweetness)

Pour mix into tall glass. Sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon on shake.

Are Apples Equivalent to Caffeine? Nope, They're Better!

I came into work today needing a "pick-me-up". I'll admit it, I was feeling a little tired. Decaf Chamomile Mint tea with honey just didn't cut it this morning, except to soothe my throat. I'm not a morning person either, so even if I wake up feeling great and well rested, it's guaranteed that I'll hit snooze at least once. On mornings where I feel exhausted still I have been known to hit the snooze button for over an hour. Yikes. I feel bad for my college roommates!

However, I have a sweet job with sweet perks... literally! I can come into work and have a delicious, crisp, organic apple. And a Pink Lady Apple at that. (I'm such a sucker for packaging and Pink Lady Apples are packaged well with their beautiful blush pink streaks with yellow.) And I'll be honest, I'm not really an apple person. I consider myself more of a citrus and banana kind of gal.

You know what they say, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away..." Maybe the old saying should go "An apple a day is better than a cup of coffee today!" It's true! Although apples do not have caffeine, they do have the glucose that fuels your brain and gives you energy. Legitimate natural energy! Talk about a pick-me-up!

This analogy brings back painful memories of the SATs! I wish I ate more apples then! Had I known of the goodness of apples sooner I would've saved tens of, gulp, maybe hundreds of dollars from buying so much darn coffee!

Everyday people are looking for new get thin quick diets. They see the commercials and hear about these new diets that promise results in very short periods of time. The real question on everyone's mind is, do they really work?

I have investigated a few popular fad diets to find out for myself. The information below might help you to decide if any of these are right for you!

In Just Two Weeks, Diet - South Beach - This diet has 3 basic phases that you have to follow in order to maintain weight loss and healthy eating habits. The first phase lasts around 2 weeks and is designed to eliminate cravings for sugary food. After you've completed the first phase you will go on to the next phase, which introduces more carbs, etc. Finally, you will begin the third phase and you can now eat more of the basic food groups minus the sugars and bad fats. (the occasional indulgence is okay)

In Just Two Weeks, Diet - Special K - According to the Special K diet, you can lose up to 6 pounds in two weeks if you follow the plan. Party Themes - Think Hawaiian With a Luau Birthday Party

Looking for a fun way to celebrate your spouses' birthday or a friend's birthday? It doesn't have to be a milestone birthday year (you know - the 30th, 40th, 50th, etc.) to organize a fun event.

So, where do you start? Does the birthday person have an overwhelming passion, interest or hobby? If so, you could consider a theme party based on their interest. Or, consider a popular theme party, such as a Luau birthday party. Following are classic recipes to help you organize a luau birthday party.

Kalua Pig

Ingredients

5 pound pork butt

2 tbsp liquid smoke

2 1/2 tbsp Hawaiian or sea salt

1 banana leaf or aluminum foil

Preparation

Score the fat of the pork butt into 1 inch squares or make several shallow long cuts along the roast. This allows the salt and liquid smoke to penetrate the meat. Rub with salt and liquid smoke over all sides of the meat and in the fat as well. Wrap the roast securely with banana leaf (or aluminum foil). Roast in a 325-350 preheated oven for about 45 minutes per pound. When meat is done, shred pork as is traditional for the luau pig.

Hawaiian Chicken with Pineapple Salsa

Ingredients

4 chicken breasts, halved, skinned and boned

1/2 cup brown onion, diced

1/3 cup brown sugar, firmly packed

2 Tbsp lemon juice

2 cloves fresh garlic, minced

1 Tbsp soy sauce

1 Tbsp honey

1 Tbsp fresh cilantro, minced

1/4 tsp red pepper flakes, crushed

1 8 ounce can of Dole crushed unsweetened pineapple (reserve juice)

Preparation

Strain the juice from the pineapple, reserving the juice. Place pineapple in a covered bowl and chill.

Put the pineapple juice in a small bowl and whisk in the soy sauce, garlic and honey. Pour over the chicken halves in a shallow dish, coating all sides. Cover and let marinate for up to 6 hours or more in the refrigerator, basting occasionally. When you're ready to cook the chicken, take the pineapple from the refrigerator and add the onions, lemon juice, brown sugar and cilantro. Mix together well. Remove the chicken from the marinade and grill or broil. Check doneness by making sure that the chicken is no longer pink in the center. Pour the marinade into a small saucepan and boil for a few minutes until reduced by half. Top the chicken with the reduced salsa and serve.
